The  thought system which dominates our culture is laced with selfish values, and relinquishing those values is a lot easier said than done. The journey to a pure heart can be highly disorienting.  For years, we may have worked for power, money or prestige.  Now all of a sudden we've learned that these are just the values of a dying world. Marianne Williamson
About This Quote

In the last forty years, we have had a "war" on poverty, racism, sexism and elitism. This has been a war fought on the academic world, in public consciousness and even in our national policies. The thing is, the war is over - we have won. We have wiped out all of these values from our society.

However, it's a lot harder to just stop thinking about them. In the fifty years before the war on poverty began, there was a vast amount of research that proved how selfish these values were. Our culture has taught us that being selfish was the only way to survive and thrive.

Now that we have evolved past this stage, it's hard to just stop thinking about things like "Poverty" and "Racism". In fact, it's almost impossible for most people to do so without feeling guilty or feeling as if they are "losing themselves".
